“Only 13% of autism families surveyed take family vacations. Yet, 93% of respondents said they would be more inclined to travel if autism services were available.” (According to a study by IBCCES)
Autism families let me tell you that Myrtle Beach, SC has entered the chat!
I recently learned about the Champion Autism Network while traveling to Myrtle Beach, SC. As I researched and learned about the program, I realized that my childhood vacation spot, was powering something incredible and so needed in the world of special needs. As a mom of a child with autism, I can’t tell you how excited I was to read about what they are doing.
I took this directly from the Visit Myrtle Beach website to prove my point: “Recognizing the needs of families traveling with autistic family members, Visit Myrtle Beach and the locally-based Champion Autism Network (CAN) – along with many attractions, hotels, restaurants, local residents and even the Myrtle Beach International Airport – have come together to make the Myrtle Beach area the ideal autism-friendly destination. From sensory-friendly experiences and autism aware, specially-trained staff to preferred entrance to attractions and travel discounts, Myrtle Beach offers an inclusive approach for families to travel together in a way only The Beach can.”
They get it. And what they don’t get, they are working to get. They’re including our kids in vacations and while many of us would rather stay home in our bubble (believe me, I’m so guilty), trying new things and going on trips with our kids is needed and important. If we want inclusion, it starts with us.
I am already planning my next trip to Myrtle Beach with my family. We are going to try the restaurants listed as part of the CAN card program. We won’t get to do everything a “normal” family might be able to do, but we are going to make memories with our boy and his sister. They both deserve the chance to try new things. And there’s no better place to try than somewhere that is doing their best to help our families feel comfortable to travel.
You can see a full list of businesses, restaurants, resorts and attractions participating in this program here and here. It is growing daily, so be sure to check back prior to arriving!
Still nervous about traveling? I get it. Don’t try until you feel completely ready. But remember, the best things happen when we step out of our comfort zones. Also, I wrote this post that I always use as my personal reminder!
Thank you to Visit Myrtle Beach and the Champion Autism Network for choosing to include. I’ll forever be a visitor!
